removing the checkmark from certain references, adding new
references and checking them - that sort of thing.

I don''t know of any cases of this. References are checked in your file because
YOU did something to make them be checked. Installing software can mess you up
by changing the version of a reference you are using and it can add more
UN-checked choices to the list, but it will not add checked choices or remove
them.

Open a new blank file and you will see exactly three checked default references
(Access 97). Those are the only ones you need to ever have checked. Any other
external libraries should be used by late binding which requires no reference.
