-- which, among other points, rightly castigated MSN for booting Opera
users on the grounds of noncompliance, while the MSN site code was
itself noncompliant. For a start, most of the MSN pages Lie looked at
had no DOCTYPE declaration.
"Interesting", says I, "I wonder if things have changed since Lie
wrote the article in 1991."
I went to support.microsoft.com, www.microsoft.com, www.msn.com and
found no DOCTYPE declarations at all, as far as the eye could see (or
randomly surf around, anyway). I went to Lie''s own home page,
http://people.opera.com/howcome/ and found, whoops!, no DOCTYPE there,
either. tut, tut. Not to mention that the a-ring in his first name
isn''t coded to be cross-platform compatible.
Now I''m looking for DOCTYPEs everywhere. [For the record, I''m running
IE5.5 on Win95/PentiumII (please don''t all laugh at once, I''m
embarrassed enough as it is)]. So far, among the busiest web sites,
I''ve found no DOCTYPEs at:

Biscuit-earning sites include:

ESPN (proving that all MSN sites are *not* alike)
Is there any pattern or sense to this, or does it totally depend on
the, ah, quirks of the different companies'' web departments?
