If one of them lived just west of Greenwich and one just east of Greenwich, then they could have their birthday 3 days apart on a leap year.

I don''t think you mean Greenwich I think you mean the International Date Line which is about 180 degrees east (or is it west :-)) round the earth from Greenwich.
