Oh lords and ladies of ciwah,
I have already been told by one person that the <h1> on my home page doesn''t
look like proper semantic markup to them. That person suggested a <p> with
style by CSS.

There are many people here who are smart and helpful. I''m hoping two or more
will agree in their answers. All my other pages do have a <h1>. Even if it
isn''t necessary to have <h1> on every page, is the <h1> used properly on
http://www.TheBicyclingGuitarist.net/index.htm ?

Not really. Hx is for *headings*, not paragraphs. Headings are like the
headlines for news stories. Or the (sub-)section heads in a text book.
On your site "Welcome to the home of The Bicycling Guitarist" (even
that is a bit long) is more appropriate for h1 than the paragraph you have
now.

Something like that. There are different kinds of headings, e.g.
- descriptive heading, which summarizes an essential part of the
content to follow (like a news headline)
- enumerative heading, such as "Chapter 5" (common in novels)
- classifying heading, which says what the following content is
_about_, without summarizing its message (common in scientific,
technical, and administrative documents), e.g. "Conclusions"
or "Economic impact of cold fusion".
The HTML heading concept is broad and general, so it covers all of the
above.
On your site "Welcome to the home of The Bicycling Guitarist"
(even that is a bit long) is more appropriate for h1 than the
paragraph you have now.

Even that is more like a greeting than a heading. As a heading,
<h1>The Bicycling Guitarist</h1>
would be more natural. (It would have exactly the same content as the
<title> element. This is by no means necessary, but often adequate.)
However, adding ", the Founder of R Band", if considered essential,
would probably be suitable.

It would also work better. When you put something into <h1>, you
unavoidably emphasize it a lot. Emphasizing too much tends to reduce
the meaning of emphasis.

Thanks everyone. The heading on my home page has changed its wording for the
first time since it went up in the spring of 1997 (I didn''t have my own
domain then).
