I've recently been compulsorily retired from the Army Reserve (ok TA) due to age (only 55) and am currently unemployed - no income.

I need to get up to speed with MS Server 2008 R2 (and later) and am looking for a cheap second hand server - rack mounted to go in a rack I have. I'll also need a copy of MS Server 2008 R2 Enterprise and I think I will need about 5 CALs.

I thought Microsoft would supply student licences and student software like this under the DreamSpark scheme, but find that one must be a full-time student on a qualifying IT course at a qualifying academic institution - enrolment to which costs £1000's, and for what I want, not worth it.

Anybody got any suggestions on hardware (preferably ebay), and software (legit and cheap)?

My first thought of course would be SQL Server Express, but if you really need Enterprise I don't know whether or not DreamSpark will do that -- I don't see it listed.
Unless they changed things, for DreamSpark you really only need an email address with a .edu and probably any community college class should get you that.


I have bought some old DEC servers via ebay, but nothing that will run Windows. :badger: Servers on ebay will probably not have drives and therefore no software at all. One of the AlphaServers I bought via ebay did come with a drive and a fresh install of OpenVMS then I just had to provide a license.


I suggest you not get hung up on what constitutes a "server"; any old PC can probably do what you need and you can upgrade later if it doesn't perform to your satisfaction.
