I am sick and tired of tutorials that just tell you what code to type or paste to build a component without explaining what the code - particularly calls to Joomla classes and services - does, or why that must be done.

A promising looking book is LEARN JOOMLA! A 2.5 Beginners Guide Ebook[^], but it's only for Joomla 2.5, and I believe Joomla 3 is quite changed from previous versions.
