When I use my free subscription using a logic app with a vault connector gets a secret with no problem. The same at my client's site causes the secret config to display badgateway. The vaults are in the same resource group and SP has been configured to allow reads for logic apps.

It seems you have not added the correct Key Vault Name while creating the connection in the Vault Name field.

Please create a new connection with the proper Key Vault Name which exists in the tenant you choose.
