Hey, I have read about azure alerts. I need it to send me an email whenever a vm restarts. 
the part i coudnt figure out was, what to put in 'initiated by' field? I want an alert to come whenever azure does some change in vm. what happens if i leave it blank?

Can you share the document which you have followed?

If you add your name in the "Event initiated by", Then we will get an alert only if you restart the machine.

For this use case, You can leave it as black. So that we will get alerts for all restats irrespective of who initiated that restart.

Tip:

You can set up the alert for all VM's in a subscription or resource group at one go. You need to select proper filters while creating the rule under "Resource" section.
