Hi, I run a website for a national event in the UK. The event runs once a year on the same weekend every year.

It is currently hosted on an Azure WebApp using the STANDARD1 Service Plan, which runs fine for 50 weeks of the year, utilising between 2 and 5% CPU (up to 100 users per day)

However, in the weeks running up to the event (this year May 5th) the usage ramps up considerably and I have to manually switch to STANDARD2 to cope with the users (last year between 5 and 10k per day, probably more this year). Once the show is over the usage tails off rapidly and drops back down to the pre show usage within a week.

I can do the UP SCALE manually, but it appears that when doing this you can only switch for the rest of the month, there does not appear to be an easy way to DOWN SCALE in the middle of a billing period - Am I missing a trick here?

Hi J Bromley, sounds like what you are currently trying to do is scaling up (adding more cores or moving to a new VM size) as opposed to scaling out (adding more instances). Is there a reason why scaling out wouldnt meet your needs? Azure App Services currently supports auo-scaling (scaling out). You should be able to set a rule to add instances based on the additional workload. Here's a useful blog to guide you.
