We have a single Ubuntu VM set up in Azure running a WordPress site Recently it's been throwing 502 Bad Gateway errors - these happen maybe 5-10 times per week and only last 1-2 minutes, then everything is fine again. Understood that an Availability Set (or the lack thereof) may be a problem, but before taking that step I'd like to figure out what's really going on.
These errors have been consistent for the past 2 weeks or so, but we've been on Azure since January, and they've only recently cropped up.
I've been through a bunch of monitor and alert settings in Azure, but am confused on how to simply monitor network uptime for the VM to see if I can figure out what's going on. Can anyone point me in the right direction?
You can use Network Watcher to monitor the traffic to the VM. This would probably be the best place to start

Besides that, check your wordpress traffic to see if you see any jumps in traffic during any particular times. It is possible you are seeing a good amount of traffic and the VM is struggling to keep up in which case you might try upping the size of the VM so it has more resources.
