Can anyone tell me if Visual Studio (I'm running VS 2017 but this applies in general) supports the ability to automatically download updates but leave the installation of the updates up to the user as to when they do this?

I've looked but find little info about this, currently whenever an updates becomes available I have to download and install at the same time and it takes a long time sometimes.

For you requirement, I'm afraid the answer is negative. As far as I know, we have no such function in visual studio. It seems there still has a way to go before we achieve this goal.

As a result, I suggest you report to MS product team through open VS -> click "provide a suggestion" in upper right of IDE asking for adding a new feature in VS.
