I'm currently very confused about tagging. After reading lots of information about it, it seemed that the main recommendation was to tag at the resource group level. This seemed logical. Then all your tags are applied to all the resources within that resource group.
I applied my tags at the resource group level for a development project. However when I then had a look at the tags in the resource, there were no tags against the resource itsself which I think is very confusing because I thought the tags were applied downwards from the Resource Group.
Can someone help me understand what the best practice is? Surely if you tag at the resource group level. You should for example, be able to go to the Data Lake Storage and see the same tags there applied at the resource group level?

Tags are actually applied per resource level and if you are applying a tag to a resource group it is not going to be applied to all resources under that RG. Tags are used to logically organize your resources which can be from different subscriptions as well. However, there are certain resources for which the tagging is not supported. Please refer to Tag Azure resources to understand different tagging concepts.
