I am using Visual Studio 2008 on a Dell Studio XPS 435T machine with Intel Core i7 processor on 64-bit Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.  I am writing a program using MFC C++.

I had many source files open, including the resource editor to edit several dialog boxes.  I selected the Project -> Show All files option and Visual Studio crashed.  After the crash I can no longer open my .rc file.  I get the error message "Opened in another editor". 

I now have closed all of the open files.   Nothing is open, let alone the .rc file.

I have rebooted my machine, trying to get the lock cleared so that I can open my file.  I have compared my .rc file with the one in source control and there is no difference between the files.  I have touched the .rc file outside of Visual Studio, and gotten the message that the file has been modified outside of Visual Studio do I want to reload it,  said yes, but the file still appears to be locked because I get the message "Opened in another editor". 

This problem appeared once before, and I somehow got access to the .rc file, but I can't reproduce what I did to make the error go away!  How do I remove the remove the internal lock on the .rc file?

I found a work around...

Use the Solution Explorer and right click on the .rc file select Open With..., Open the .rc file with any of the text editors.  This succeeds even though trying to open the .rc file regularly results in the "Opened in another editor" error.  Close the file.   This seems to remove the lock.

Now when I try to use the resource editor it can open the file.
