We are working with our partners to get the latest updates from them on in-guest IaaS VM backup-recovery and disaster-recovery. The blog post covers the partners we are working with. Azure Backup and Azure Site Recovery documentation should be available in the next few weeks. We are finalizing validation and content with the teams.

Specifically on SQL 2016... are you referring to SQL/mysql PaaS RP and the hosting server? or SQL 2016 in general? If the question is RE: the PaaS RP, the team is working on backup/restore of the RP. However, protecting the database hosting server is an operator action. So for that, use the product you feel comfortable with for SQL backups. Most already offer SQL backup and restore.
