I am trying to find information on how to connect Visio 2016 Professional to an AWS MySQL 5.7 database.  I have not found any information in Visio's help, Google searches, or Microsoft forums.  I purchased Visio 2016 Professional for this one reason.  It is one of the key features of Professional touted on Microsoft's Visio homepage.  Yet, I cannot find any information on how to build this connection much less how to troubleshoot the connection.

You can do that using standard ODBC approach.
Step by step (assuming you have default Visio, 32 bit):

1. Install MySql ODBC driver. Just download and install (click-click-click)
https://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/odbc/5.3.html

2. Create new ODBC data source using this driver. Make sure you select "Unicode" driver
ODBC data sources -> Add -> MySQl -> Enter your data. 

When creating connection, specify you AWS database connection information (from the "endpoint" section in AWS console)

3. Select that data source when creating a connection to data from Visio
(Link Shapes to Data -> Other OLE/ODBC data source -> Select your data source)
