I am using Internet explorer 8 (version 8.0.6001.18813).

One of my clients has pointed out to me that the text box part of the input type=file element is now greyed out and not able to be typed in by default.  He says he used to be able to type into this box until about two months ago.

Is this to do with an update to IE?

Is there any way to allow text to be entered into this box again?

That's a security update. To block web sites that trick the user into typing a local file path into the control, now the user must explicitly select a file for upload using the File Browse dialog.
