I have done a few searches but can't seem to find anything specific to my question.

We currently have a network with 1 Exchange Server (2010) working with a Blackberry Enterprise Server (Express), considering the current Blackberry trend we are looking to move away from BES and start using ActiveSync for our devices.

I am looking to do away with the BES and introduce another exchange server to handle just the ActiveSync connections, my question is, what is the most secure way to go about this without having to alter the network drastically. Is it recommended to set up a CAS and put it in a DMZ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You definitely should not put CAS in DMZ. Actually, ActiveSync is pretty easy for deployment, as it uses just one port for client communication (443). You just have to find a way to securely publish it to the Internet. TMG was a perfect solution but Microsoft discontinued it. YOu can consider UAG 2010 instead, or you can use some third-party solution for publishing.
