I understand that NFC is not supported out of the box by the Microsoft Surface Table.  Is there any possiblity of attaching an NFC receiver to the table and reading a NFC enabled card through the receiver. We have a usecase wherein the user places the card on the table and we have to read the card number for further processing. But with Scanning and OCR possibilities ruled out, i want to understand if we can have a NFC receiver attached and use a NFC enabled card to make the usecase work.

Please let me know the possibility of this. If this is possible, what are the APIs that are available to get the data from the card through NFC.

Since the Surface 2.0 (now PixelSense) is 'just a machine running Windows 7' (and a Surface Shell), you can attach all kinds of external devices to it. My guess would be that with a USB NFC receiver attached which has a decent Windows 7 driver and an API or SDK to communicate with it, you should be good to go.
