We have a customer who has around 40000 Lync clients running in the enterprise spread across many geographical locations.

There are 2 Different Pools having 4FE's and 3FE servers in each pool respectively. Customer has complained that sometimes the IM message fails to reach the other end ( point to point IM ) . I understand that all IM messages actually pass through FE servers as the IM text is included in the SDP part of the SIP message.

Unless you see other evidence of excessive load on the servers, it's not likely to be a performance issue.  I've most often seen this when there are transient network issues between the endpoints and the servers.
