I am continuing to create visio shapes linked to data imported from Excel.  I've had a successful system for awhile, but now I've changed spreadsheets and started on a new Visio document and I'm getting different results with the same constituents.

My problematic area is numeric values in Excel with corresponding custom units attached.  Prior to now, I've been able to import these vales into Visio and the units import as well.  My custom format is as follows:  # "gpm".  So for example each cell reads 26 gpm, 5 gpm, 10 gpm, etc.  Now when I import these values into Visio, they default as a numeric value and not a string.  So my values in Visio turn into 26, 5, 10, etc.  There doesn't seem to be a practical way to add these units after importing into Visio.  I've tried modifying the Shape Data Type, as well as modifying the column data types in the "Link Data to Shapes" area under my chart.  Neither will postmortem convert the values back to include "gpm".  I've tried to reformat my table in Excel using a slightly different custom unit still to no avail.  I'm at a lost on why Visio continues to import numeric values where they were always strings before.

Everything I've compared between my old and new Excel sheets is exactly the same.  The formatting, the custom unit, everything.  I have no idea what Visio is doing and it seems like it's an underlying problem with data types in Excel, but I can't figure it out.  Is there a way to change the default Visio data type for importing.  I feel like if I could change it to string, rather than number, PRIOR to importing the data it would work again.

Ok, so somehow I've unknowingly solved that problem via some unknown formatting in Excel....

Once the old data is deleted, the shape data box shows it's in fact empty, but the text is still displayed on the shape.  The new data is linked into Visio, and when I drag and drop a row onto the shape, the old data just stays there.  I just had this working about 5 minutes ago....and know it won't work anymore.
