I am trying to download the Server 2008 R2 vhd image from 
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=5c74880c-ced5-4a1b-9888-8cb027c628f5&displaylang=en 
and I jsut get the regular file save dialog under Vista and under Windows 7. 
Shouldn't FTM inject itself to do the download? I've tried IE7 and IE8, both 
64 and 32 bit versions. It worked on other MSFFT downloads just fine earlier.

Hi Dave,

I think they use client side scripting to invoke the MS DLC control. I have only seen it invoked on the MSDN and technet subscription download sites.

You should be able to find the Server 2008 r2 download on the MSDN subscriptions site.
