I have a virtual machine created by VMWare that is used by developers containing various applications such as BizTalk 2006, VS2005, SQL Server 2005, etc.  This machine may or may not have been already cloned but each developer works independently on their own machine. I have a need to create several new clones (with new names) for a new project. P2V or V2V appears to be fairly straight forward but there are more roadblocks with renaming the clones for BizTalk (previous machine name stored in various places, SID, etc.). I'd like to have a single machine that can be cloned over and over for our developers.

I have found several good articles but I am trying to find a more stable solution other than "fix it till it works and EventViewer is clean":

We also are planning a BizTalk 2010 upgrade so I am looking for a solution that is extensible but will settle with anything right now. I also discussed this with a colleague who said System Center Virtual Machine Manager could be used to do the proper rename but I need to do more research.

One thing which I use some time is

• Create a VM
• Install all the Softwares (BizTalk/VS/SQL etc)
• Do not configure BizTalk at this point.
• When ever we need to create a new VM simply copy the preinstall VM (VHD File) and rename the SQL Instance with MAchine Bios Name and set a new IP
• Configure BizTall after the changes.

It worked for me always.. but for a creating a new one it takes around 30 min to configure  biztalk ..
