I need to update my keyword bids to hit position 1 through the API but I can't find an appropriate opperation.  What I need is to provide just the keyword and have returned the bid needed to reach position 1, in a similar way to when you click the 'keyword bids' button on the AdCenter Desktop, or when you click the 'Update all bids for best position' button through the web interface.

The only operation I have found that is close to what I need is 'GetKeywordEstimatesByBids' which requires that you specify a bid and will give you a prediction as to it's position and performance, which with a fair bit of hit-and-miss itteration, I may be able to make work, but is not ideal.

While not widely available, there is a pilot program ongoing at http://ksp.microsoft.com. Keyword Services Platform v6.0 should provide the direct functionality that you are requesting. Currently the approach that you described above with GetKeywordEstimatesByBids is the recommended solution.
