Would like to see an eraser tool, smudge tool, as well as sharpen and blur tools. Some of the basic tools I use everyday in other applications that prevent me from using Design more.

Try searching the Design forum for 'eraser'; there have been many previous requests, but you'll also find ways to do what you want.

Have you used the Blend Modes via the down arrow on the Appearance palette>Show Advanced Properties, or the Effects palette where you have Gaussian Blur and Unsharp Mask available, among others?  Considering that Expression Design is primarily a vector and not a bitmap/raster program results are very good.
