DO I have to have twitter app installed for me to see the mentions? my mentions are not coming through. THey don't show up in notification center either.

As of 8.1, sadly, mentions and photo sharing through social networks has been removed. You must now rely on the corresponding applications for these features. However, if you feel that this was a mistake and wish for it back, i suggest you vote for the feature suggestion on Microsoft's UserVoice page.
