We have a Project File that we have synced to SharePoint 0365.
We want the team members to only update the Actual Start Dates in SharePoint to sync up to the Project File, which only the PM has access to.
When syncing the files and adding Actual Start Date, we received the following message: "The value of the following fields are dependent on each other in Microsoft Project. In order to maintain the dependency, on the last field (Start) will be synched between SharePoint and Microsoft Project. The other fields (Actual Start) will have their value controlled by the value for Start"
What we are finding is:
If a user adds a date to Actual Start Date, the Project sync automatically overrides the SharePoint field to the Start date that is set in Project.
If a user changes the Start Date and not the Actual Date, then the Project sync automatically overrides the SharePoint field to the Baseline Start Date.
The only way a user can set an Actual Start Date in SharePoint that syncs correctly is to change both the Start Date AND Actual Start Date in SharePoint.
Is this expected behavior? Is there any way to only make a team member change the Actual Start Date and have that automatically update the Start Date?

While co-authoring the What's New book on Microsoft Project 2013, I ran into exactly the same issue when writing about new features in the Sync with SharePoint Tasks List feature. I found this issue very frustrating, and could not find a way around it.
As a work around to this limitation, I suspect that you will need to ask your team members to enter their progress using the Start field rather than the Actual Start field. But I would also gladly welcome other users in this community to submit their own suggestions. Hope this helps.
