I have only seen this when the data being returned does not match the schema in which the report was designed off of.  Either columns not coming back, or being of the wrong data type.  Are you sure that the dataset you are populating is actually getting data?  Also, the VS 2005 hasa a built in preview which does not work when using datasets it insteads populates itself with bogus data.
