I am programmer with good experience of Java and VB6, Excel VBA and C (for Windows, mainly), with a bit of shell scripting for Unix, thrown in. I am just wondering what is the best technology to learn to program .NET desktop applications. I have tried a little WinForms and I found it easy and somewhat similar to early Java GUI programming. Is it a good idea to learn to program using Winforms, then go on to WPF? I am concerned that I may need to be able to deal with legacy code, as well as programming going forward. So, are Winforms dead and should I concentrate soley on WPF, or should I make the effort to learn Winforms, as well?
