Does anyone know the current performance of the next generation of Kinect Sensors in direct sunlight? You will have to test the sunlight conditions which you intend to use the sensor in. Sunny day vs. partly cloudy will have vary levels of IR interference. With any infrared based(IR) technology, any external source emitting IR is a cause for interference. If you have an IR source that emits at the frequency of the detector, it will pick it up. Which is why you don't see people walking around in daylight with night vision goggles.

If you intend to use the Kinect outdoors, you should consider using IR filtering glass, or building some type of canopy that can reduce the amount of light in the area you wish to use the sensor. Even indoors, some lighting used on stages can also cause IR interference. The amount of glass required, would have to be large enough to cover the entire area, which isn't always cost effective.

The Kinect provides an IR sample in the toolkit. You can get a good idea of how the area would look with and without sunlight and compare for yourself.
