We've been running Project Server successfully for about a year.  Within the past couple months, we have had an increase of random queue failures.  Primarily, when a PM saves their project, they will receive an email indicating a queue failure, but then the queue seems to resolve itself and the project saves fine.  I was made aware of this, but I chose not to pursue the reasons until more symptoms started to appear.

Just now, I had made a modification to a user's security, and the screen sat still for a second and I pondered to myself, what's up?, but then it completed fine.  I then received an email that the queue failed.  Same symptom - the queue failure message, but then it resolves itself and no action required.

I'm wondering, before I open Pandora's box of error messages with the ULSViewer, is there some more fundamental project server feature that I may be overlooking that might be causing an increase in queue failures?  Is there perhaps a database index that I'm missing?  Is there something that has too much history and needs to be purged?
