I finally found the answer on this very forum - indirectly. With Illustrator, such things are done with a feathered shape. In Design, feathering is done with a bitmap airbrush in eraser blend mode. So the solution was to cut a part of the ellipse, assign the airbrush stroke and lay over the burron with the eraser blend mode.
