I've been looking through the SkyDrive API docs and cannot see any guidance on logging into SkyDrive using hardcoded credentials. Every example seems to invite a user to manually authenticate.

Basically I want to use SkyDrive as an image hosting solution for my test website. Is this possible?

Users should be manually authenticating to Live Connect sites.  Storing credentials to sign in to SkyDrive programmatically is not supported:
