I have a custom Defect work item type implemented in our production environment. This same work item is also implemented in a Proof of Concept (PoC) Team Project to test and validate any major changes to the template.

Unfortunately, the production version of the work item sets a default Area Path whenever a new Defect is being created. This is completely undesirable as some users then forgetfully tend to save the newly-created Defect set to this default programme area path, thereby leading to incorrect reporting etc. Rather oddly, in our PoC team project, new Defects are automatically set to the root Area Path, which is precisely what we require.

In the end I resolved my own issue. It happens that someone with similar Admin permissions had accidentally reset the default area from within the TFS Web client. Changing it back to the root Area node fixed it.
