On one of my client's SP 2013 servers, whenever I add an empty dataview webpart, save the page and then view it in the browser it displays the error "Unable to display this webpart..." This happens on a brand new webpart or aspx page with no other edits made to it other than adding the empty dataview webpart. I can proceed and add a datasource but I still get the error when viewing the page so it seems like there is something wrong with the dataview webpart on this server.

One thing I noticed is that after adding the datasource, I do not have any of the datasource's fields to use for grouping or filtering so it seems like something is not working correctly. I do not have access to the logs so I cannot check the correlation ID. If I choose a list directly from the dataview menu rather than choosing "Empty Data View" the list will display in the browser but technically this is a list view web part and the same issue occurs with not having any of the fields for filtering or grouping.

When you first get the "Unable to display this webpart..." error, whether you just add a Empty Data View without giving data source?

If that’s the case, I can reproduce the issue, after checking the ULS log, I get the cause "Value cannot be null", it might that we cannot view the empty data in the browser.
