One important thing: a SharePoint content database can contain multiple site collections, but a SharePoint site collections cannot span across multiple content database.
You can find here the content database limits: as you can read, a content database's size (for all usage scenarios) can be up to 4 TB (provided that some conditions are met), but it is always recommended to try to keep the content database size under 200 GB.
I'm constantly working on several SharePoint systems which have some content databases that are larger than 1 TB and we've never incurred into any kind of problems, but I'd recommend you to follow the Microsoft recommendations: in the future, you could think about refactoring the biggest content databases by creating separate ones and then creating new, smaller site collections into those separate content databases.
