While using Visual Studio 2017, it has been frequently locking up and giving designer errors. By "locking up" I basically mean that it will not let me type, navigate (use the arrow keys), or click an area of my code to move the cursor. The designer frequently, for no reason that I can come up with, gives the error "An Unhandled Exception has occurred". If I click "Click here to reload the designer", it will usually show my design again after a few seconds, but then the error often comes back at seemingly random times. When the designer gives the error, it also removes everything from the Properties window. All these things make it very hard and frustrating to work on my Projects. What is the problem, and how can I fix it? Thanks.

From you description, seems that the VS is crashing from time to time.

There are two main aspects that could lead to this: your computer environment and VS IDE is affected by third-party extension or add-ins.

Please try with following steps for troubleshooting:

1. Check your windows update and apply to them all to the newest.

2. Clean %temp% folder.

3. Close all the VS 2017 instances.

4. Re-run the VS 2017 installer as administrator, then click the icon besides 'Launch' and choose 'Repair' to perform a repair and continue the setup process.

5. Run VS in devenv /safemode: open VS with safe mode and if this issue is gone, which means the installed extensions caused this issue, you can go to Tools-Extensions and Updates-Installed, remove the newly installed extension one by one to find the specific one.
