We have a spreadsheet containing read-only data that is very wide.  We would like to implement a view so that a user can search by 2 of the columns (ID and name columns) and view the data of a specific row, in a layout totally that is more suited to the data being presented.    Are there built in approaches to implement this in excel?

If you use Custom Views (on the View Ribbon menu), you can hide and unhide columns and toggle between one view and the other. Set your columns the way you want them, click Custom Views, Add, Name your view and close. Do the same thing for your alternate view and you can now toggle by double-clicking on the View Name in the Custom Views dialog box.
