As a last resort, I tried using Microsoft's Visual Studio Uninstaller.

I let it run while I was away from my computer and it did some weird stuff. I think it killed explorer.exe because the toolbar was gone and my desktop was black. Upon restarting my computer it appeared that it had done no permanent damage. However, Visual Studio still wasn't gone, and now the installer won't work! The installer logs say, "Error Message Id: 1722 ErrorMessage: There is a problem with this Windows Installer package. A program run as part of the setup did not finish as expected. Contact your support personnel or package vendor." I've tried redownloading the installer but with no luck.

But From my point of view, the uninstall performance you did previously could do some damage of your system files or registry keys, so that the installation couldn't continue. please check all your windows update and patches, make sure they are all to the newest. I agree with you that a system restore will provide you a much clean and healthy environment of application install and run.
