I am developing a windows 8 phone application and I would like to add an icon to the status bar for showing some status indication. I read that the status bar in windows phone's reserved and could not be modified.

Is there any way to add one custom icon in the status bar? If not, can I have a new custom status bar. Is there any UI guidelines for this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

An app cannot add icons to the system tray but you can specify if the system tray is visible within your app / page by setting the SystemTray.IsVisible property.
