Hi,

I haven’t found any official document mentioned about Event driven crawling, even the third-party solution mentioned the customization is done by content API but the API is marked as deprecated by Microsoft and it was removed from SharePoint 2013.

While you could configure continues crawl with proper schedule so item new/update could refresh in search.

While frequent crawl depends on server configuration for high performance, I would suggest you check below search archtechture to setup the farm.
