I have a quick question with regards to Microsoft’s embrace of Open Source compared to their development support offerings.

This question came up as we were evaluating the use of various components for a new OWIN+WebAPI based service.  One of the predominantly argued benefits of sticking with Microsoft produced libraries/etc. is the idea that support is available within the blanket of the Visual Studio Subscription (MSDN).  However, as Microsoft has embraced releasing many development components under open source licenses, that don’t specifically mention support services in the same way prior releases had, that question about official support looms.

So with all that being said, I’m looking to find out where Microsoft’s official support ends.  Does it end the moment a library/project is wholly open sourced, even though it’s primarily Microsoft produced (e.g., Katana, Entity Framework 7, Powershell 6, ASP.NET Core, .NET Core)?  Or, is it the moment that it’s not under the Microsoft + Open Source umbrella (e.g. isn’t listed @ https://opensource.microsoft.com/), such as Newtonsoft’s Json.NET – an open source library used by WebAPI 2.2.  I'm sure the latter is definitely true but ultimately what I’m hoping for is something that clearly defines where that support line ends, as the various support sites don't provide a clear delineation.

Also, if anyone has any suggestions for where to go to ask this question it would be much appreciated.  I, unfortunately, haven't had a lot of luck with Visual Studio Technical Support as they don't appear to be familiar with all of the open source libraries that Microsoft has released.

Welcome to MSDN forum.

Microsoft has provided the open source for .Net, but it is still supported. It's hard to say that microsoft ends the support because of its open source.

when Microsoft want to stop the support for one technology, they will inform us in advance. If you want to find out where Microsoft’s official support ends, you could go to the site: https://visualstudio.uservoice.com/forums/121579-visual-studio to submit your idea.
