Open a new Excel document... in cells A1, A2, A3, and A4 fill them with the first four theme colors...

Save the file... Close Excel.

Extract the styles xml of the document, and notice the fill pattern colors. When you expect A1's fill color to point to theme=0... and A2 to theme=1.. A3 to theme = 2 and A4 to theme = 3... you will be surprised to find them as

 

A1's fill theme color points to 1, A2's theme points to 0, A3 points to 3 and A4 points to 2...

 

However if you use any theme color after the first four, the indexes are saved correctly in the styles fill part.

 

Has anyone noticed this before.. is this an intended behaviour? If yes, then what is the reason?

 

Since this is consistent irrespective of the theme, is this a bug by any chance?

Sorry, but I am not sure what you problem is. When you re-open the workbook, the colors have been mixed up? I cannot reproduce this problem.

Please note that the order or the colors in the UI does not necessarily have to correspond the order of theme colors in the clrScheme collection in theme1.xml.
