I was hoping that you may be able to assist with an issue that we're having with one record in our Sharepoint.

When we try open the record we get an error that stops us viewing the record.

NOTE: We used to have a Sharepoint specialist but he has since left the business. His method was to open the record, remove the HTML formatting from the message by cutting/pasting to Notepad, then copy/pasting back to Sharepoint. But I'm not sure how he used to open the record - I had the idea that he did it by "Modifying the View" but I can't see how to do this for myself.

Sounds like he was either using the "Quick Edit" option that you can find in the List ribbon bar (which switches the current view to datasheet mode) OR he actually created a new view, using the Datasheet option.

Either way works with regards to modifying fields, but of course if the body field is not in the current/default view then you will need to create a datasheet view that includes that column.
