Can I have SharePoint alerts (changes on documents, new list itens, etc) being sent to SharePoint Groups or AD Groups or is it only to individual accounts?

this is option isn't available in the out of the box alert setting, BUT  you can do through custom solutions as the following :-

1-使用SharePoint Designer创建工作流以将警报发送到组，看看下面的照片

1- Create workflow using SharePoint designer to send alerts to group , have a look on below shots
