I am wondering about other options. For example, is there a way that adding an item to a list could also trigger creation of an outlook calendar reminder?  I would prefer calendar reminders over task entries due to the fact that the task lists are seldom used in the environment this is for, and adding a dependence on it might result in people ignoring out of ignorance something important.

Are there other "out of the box" ways to automate the creation of reminders?

The simplest way is to create workflow to achieve your requirement that remind someone of an upcoming deadline.
