Are you resizing the image at all? I ask because it could be that it actually *IS* working and if you're not re-sizing it, the portion of the very large image it takes and is displaying on the users screen could just be black so it looks like it didn't take a picture. I had that happen to me quite a few times until I realized I had to scale it down so the user could see it (or allow them to scroll around in it).

Just a thought.
