The windows search indexer uses Outlook to retrieve information from the .ost/.pst files it stores emails in. The windows search indexer needs Outlook to be installed, otherwise it won't know how to read the .ost/.pst files. 

However, if Outlook is installed, you can query for any email properties directly from the indexer as an OLE-DB provider:
