The first, called Humanities, actually deals with the primary feature request that I want in Word: support for preformatted footnotes as citations. The Humanities style is unique in that its in-text citations are not parenthetical. Instead, they are footnotes or endnotes. The citations are close to bibliographical citations except that they use cited page numbers at the end. As it happens, the bibliography format used by MS Word in the Chicago and Turabian styles is in the Humanities style. The publication year is with the other publication data, all personal names are given as on the source except for inversion, and the phrases edited by and translated by are spelled out in full. Titles that are not italicized are placed in double quotation marks, and double quotation marks within the title become single and vice-versa.

The format currently used by MS Word in the in-text citations, however, is the author-date system. In this system, the in-text citations are parentheticals with only the author, the date, and the page numbers. That is why it is supported by Microsoft Word. The bibliography style differs primarily in that the publication year is always the second item of the citation, in that personal names are given with only the last name in full (the rest indicated by initials), and that the phrases edited by and translated by are abbreviated as ed. and trans., respectively. Non-italicized titles are never placed in quotation marks, and the quotation marks within the title always remain single or double as they are on the source.
