I am using Windows XP professional and my machine is current with all the Microsoft updates including Explorer 8 but I use Firefox. I have Realtek on my motherboard and one day the sound quit working. I went to control panel and checked for sound and audio devices and there is no default device in the sound playback under the audio tab.  I uninstalled the software and restalled the software and checked it again with the same results. I installed a turtle beach sound card, ran the software from the web site and disabled the Realtek on the motherboard. I am still having the same result. Can you tell me what I am missing? I have searched this web site and many other web sites with no results. Thanks for any help.

I am looking for the answer to this myself................

In XP Pro, had installed M-Audio Delta 1010 sound card and ran extremely well for 3 years. Uninstalled driver. Installed FocusRite 1394 sound card. Card works with pro audio where Asio driver can be selected, but all windows audio, winamp, etc are silent. A default audio driver cannot be selected because downdevice list is greyed out. Same for input devices as well as MIDI.

I can email a screen shot showing what I mean if needed.
