I'm pretty sure the search index doesn't actually store all these properties or it would be huge! Could anyone tell me which properties actually are stored in the index (Windows.edb or other associated files)? The file name and path are obviously in there and I believe the last modified time is, too. Anything else?

The list you referred to is a schema, it contains all properties WDS3 knows "by name". It does not mean every document contains every property from the schema, although most "generic file properties" are stored for every item. In addition to the properties from the schema, WDS also stores whatever custom properties a document may contain, but you'd have to write your own client to query for them. That's why the documentation says "partial".

This schema only describes WDS3. Vista/WDS4 schema is even larger, and in Windows 7 shell and indexer use a unified property system.  Here's the latest list: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/dd561977(VS.85).aspx
